Why You Might Need Lactation Cookies…

Lactation cookies are to support mothers on their breastfeeding journey. Breastmilk usually comes in a few days after you give birth, but each woman’s supply can range depending on the uniqueness of their body. Lactation cookies are one way to boost and/or maintain a woman’s milk supply through the presence of milk enhancing ingredients called ‘galactagogues.’ The four main ingredients that help boost milk production are:

Rolled Oats contain iron and can help promote milk supply.  They are also packed with fiber and can help reduce stress levels (ya know, because new moms don’t have much stress!!!)

Flaxseed has phytoestrogens (compounds that naturally occur in plants) that can help boost milk supply. It also has an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, such as ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) and DHAs (docosahexaenoic acid).

Brewer’s Yeast is believed to be a galactogogue, which is a supplement nursing mothers use to support lactation and produce more breast milk. Brewer’s yeast has been shown to enhance energy levels and boost the immune system. It is full of B vitamins, protein, iron and minerals. All of the B vitamins help break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, which provides the body with more energy. Therefore, even if you’re not breastfeeding, every busy new mom can use these cookies as a sweet, pick-me-up at any time of the day!

Coconut oil is high in saturated fat (but not cholesterol). Coconut products can increase lauric acid and capric acid in nursing mothers, which can result in creating rich milk and health promoting nutrients. Coconut oil helps provide energy in the form of medium chain fatty acids (as opposed to long chain) to help the baby grow and develop properly. Coconut is also an excellent source of fat that quickly converts to energy.
